Beyond the Farm Gate

Danielle Costley

Beyond the Farm Gate by Danielle Costley takes you on a culinary journey through Australia’s Southwest.

It’s a journey that’s both breathtaking and yet deeply communal, at one with the people, places and produce that are home to the South West Region. Here, the food is very much an expression of craftsmanship and, at times, the very lifeblood of the community.

Whether it is black Perigord truffles, chestnuts, raw Jarrah honey, grass-fed Wagyu, rustleberries, native finger limes, pastured biodynamic chickens or organic avocados, this book is a celebration of the beautiful produce on our doorstep

Beyond the Farm Gate celebrates and pays tribute to the artisan food growers who are dedicated to the art of producing flavoursome, high quality produce. Danielle Costley's in depth interviews with 31 growers reveal the interesting and diverse backgrounds of these food growers some of who share recipes that have been passed down from one generation to another.

Embark on a food-finding mission that begins with a unique berry that earned its name from a Tiger snake, unearth the rare and elusive black Perigord truffle, pop beads of citrus caviar in your mouth or pluck a Greenlip abalone from the pristine waters of Flinders Bay. Savour dry-salted organic capers, or sample fresh, oozingly decadent jarrah honeycomb straight from a beehive.

Beautifully photographed by Chris Gurney, Beyond the Farm Gate unlocks the stories and secret recipes from a melting pot of flavours and influences. This book will want to make you pack your bags and disappear for a few days on a gastronomic adventure that will leave you craving more.

"In both its form and subject matter, Beyond the Farm Gate is all about ‘quality’. Danielle Costley’s exploration of the food culture of Australia’s south-west has produced a book that is equally about people, places and the shared passions, hard work and commitment that unite individuals within a genuine community. Beautifully published in hardback, with individual leitmotifs distinguishing each chapter, mouth-watering images of local produce – everything from mulberry leaf tea to abalone to artisan sheep cheeses – and a collection of recipes showcasing the produce to perfection, this is a book that you will want to refer to on a regular basis and also keep safe within your family to hand down through the generations." - Writing WA, 2015.

“When I picked up this book and started flicking through its pages I had an immediate yearning to pack up and head off in our caravan to discover the places and foods this book features.” - Reading, Writing and Riesling.

“My whole family adored Chris Gurney’s photography and even though the book is a fairly hefty tome, my small son will often drag it over to me so we can spend time exploring the photos of sleek and content cows, farm dogs, flocks of startling white sheep, purple-blue marron, and happy chickens producing the brightest orange yolks you’ll ever have the pleasure to taste. After reading through Beyond the Farm Gate again, I found myself with a glass of West Australian chardonnay in hand, searching for flights to Western Australia. I’ll guarantee you’ll likely find yourself googling for flights there too.” - Sara Schwarz for Visit Vineyards.

“This book will want to make you pack your bags and disappear for a few days on a gastronomic adventure!” - Jacqueline Lang for The Starfish.
