Kate_Glenister’s enthusiasm is infectiously amiable. Her writing is similarly easy to like, such is Glenister’s ability to capture the minutiae of grief. Her story, ‘A House’, will be published in the upcoming Margaret River Press anthology, Shibboleth and other stories. We spoke to hear about her world, and the way that she sees it…
What are you reading?
Every time someone has asked me this in the last few months, I have told them about “The Natural Way of Things” by Charlotte Wood. This book absolutely haunted me after I read it. I thought about it every day for months afterwards. I first read this book last November, and devoured it all in one sitting. It’s hard to describe the plot for fear of spoiling it for other people. I went into it completely blind to the plot, and I would like everyone else to have that experience, too! It’s the best book I’ve read in a long time. Any reader will come out of it a changed person. I think I annoyed all of my friends bugging them to read it! Aside from that, I have Liane Moriarty’s novel “Big Little Lies” waiting for me to finish it!
What are you listening to?
I’m a playlist person. I love finding songs here and there and then collating them into a list of my own. My go-to songs to pop on at the moment are ‘Hospital Beds’ by Cold War Kids, ‘Wild Horses’ by The Rolling Stones, ‘Ship To Wreck’ by Florence + The Machine and ‘Why Don’t We Do It In The Road’ by The Beatles. I’m also absolutely obsessed with the new Panic! At The Disco album “Death of A Bachelor.” If you like jazzy tunes and showy vocals, ‘Impossible Year’ and ‘Death of A Bachelor’ are both must-listens. Also, I’m quite into podcasts. It’s great how you can search one of your interests and find an entire world out there with other people who you can nerd out about it with! If you want to get into podcasts but don’t know if you’ll be able to stick it out, start with ‘Serial’ season one. It will blow your socks off!
What are you watching?
I’m really into television. My friends always tell me that they can’t believe how many shows I watch, but I like different things for different reasons. I just finished binge-watching season four of House of Cards, and am kind of angry with myself for not showing restraint and savouring it longer. I love House of Cards for taking influence from “Richard III” and using direct address to the audience, and for Kevin Spacey’s incredible performance, of course. Also, whether you’re a Breaking Bad fan or not, Better Call Saul is something I watch for the great acting. It’s really character-centric and the plot is driven by inter-personal conflict but not in a trashy way. I’m also really into The Walking Dead because they’re the very best at building tension, and creating small moments in each episode that don’t get lost in the big action/drama hype of the zombie genre.
